Ryan Fish:  I was 21 when I saw the now famous “Iron-War” between Dave Scott and Mark Allen at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. As I watched them battle shoulder to shoulder the last miles of the marathon I knew that day that at some point in my life I needed to hear Mike Riley the voice of Ironman say, “Ryan Fish, you are an Ironman”!!! The 1st Sunday in November 2008 being lucky enough to register online was the day I discovered that I’d have my chance a year later to realize this long-time dream of becoming an Ironman.  The morning after my registration was confirmed for the 2009 Florida Ironman my anxiety began to mount over the distance involved in completing the 140.6 mile distance.  I had participated in half-iron triathlons, marathons, etc. but the reality of competing from dawn until well after dark was a daunting prospect.  I had the good fortune of choosing Lorie Tucker with Dream Big to coach me through the year-long training regimen.  Not only was Lorie a 2-time Ironman finisher at the time (now 4-time) but her expertise gained from her peers at Gorilla became evident immediately.  My biggest fear was the 2.4 mile swim!!  When I started swimming a year before my Ironman I couldn’t swim more than 3 laps without hanging on the side of the pool.  Lorie gave me drills to work on stroke technique and within days my endurance and efficiency began to improve.  Throughout the year as my overall endurance began to increase in all 3 disciplines Lorie was always an encouraging voice and her experience was evident in the workout plans she gave me.  Not only was I able to finish the swim, I did so in a much better time than I ever thought possible and felt great as I embarked on the 112 mile bike.  I would absolutely recommend having a coach for anyone training for the longer distance triathlons, as accountability and expertise is an invaluable part of competing and doing well whether your goals are to merely finish or place as an age grouper.  I not only competed and finished the 2009 Florida Ironman, but felt great about my race and much of that success was because of the coaching and direction that I received during that year.  Thanks Lorie and thanks Dream Big Multisport!!!
